Drug intelligence / Profile preview
rVSV-BDBV (also known as rVSV-BDBV-GP) is an investigational live-attenuated recombinant vesicular stomatitis virus (rVSV) vector vaccine being developed by IAVI (International AIDS Vaccine Initiative) in collaboration with Hilleman Laboratories, SK bioscience, and IDT Biologika. The vaccine is designed to prevent Bundibugyo virus disease, an Ebola-type disease caused by the Bundibugyo ebolavirus (BDBV). It utilizes the same rVSV vector platform as the licensed Ervebo vaccine, but expresses the Bundibugyo virus glycoprotein (GP) instead of the Zaire ebolavirus glycoprotein. In preclinical studies in nonhuman primates, a single dose of rVSV-BDBV demonstrated high-level protective efficacy within days of vaccination. The vaccine is undergoing process development, manufacturing scale-up, and clinical evaluation supported by funding from the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI), with plans for Phase 1 clinical trials and a subsequent ring vaccination trial in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).
