RWQWRWQWR-Ahx-RRWQWR is a synthetic hybrid anticancer peptide (ACP) designed by combining a core palindromic sequence derived from bovine lactoferricin (RWQWRWQWR) with a shorter ACP fragment (RRWQWR) via a 6-aminohexanoic acid (Ahx) spacer. Developed by researchers in Colombia, this cationic and amphipathic molecule targets the negatively charged surfaces of cancer cells. Its mechanism of action involves initial electrostatic attraction to the cell membrane followed by hydrophobic interaction of tryptophan residues with the lipid bilayer, leading to membrane disruption, internalization, and induction of apoptosis. In preclinical studies, it has demonstrated significant and rapid cytotoxic activity against human cervical cancer cell lines, including HeLa and Ca Ski, with a favorable selectivity index compared to normal fibroblasts and erythrocytes.
