RXI-231 is a self-delivering RNA interference (RNAi) compound developed using Phio Pharmaceuticals' proprietary INTASYL siRNA gene silencing technology. It is designed to target and reduce the expression of the tyrosinase (TYR) gene, a key enzyme involved in melanin synthesis. By downregulating TYR, RXI-231 reduces melanin production and pigmentation in skin cells. Preclinical studies have shown that topical application of RXI-231 significantly decreases tyrosinase mRNA levels and melanin content in both normal human melanocytes and 3D human epidermal models. The compound has demonstrated visible reduction of pigmentation without causing skin irritation, supporting its potential as a treatment for hyperpigmentation disorders such as melasma and lentigines.
