Overview

S-(D-Carboxybutyl)-L-homocysteine is a synthetic small molecule and an analog of homocysteine, classified as an alpha amino acid. It acts as a bisubstrate analog inhibitor of betaine-homocysteine S-methyltransferase (BHMT), an enzyme involved in the methylation of homocysteine to methionine using betaine as a methyl donor. By mimicking both substrates, this compound binds to BHMT and induces conformational changes that can protect the enzyme from oxidative inactivation or serve as a tool for studying enzyme mechanism and structure. It is primarily used experimentally in biochemical research rather than clinical settings[1][2][6].
