Overview

S‑9‑(2‑hydroxypropyl)adenine is a synthetic purine derivative belonging to the class of organic compounds known as 6‑aminopurines. It is the S-isomer of 1-(6-amino-purin‑9‑yl)-propan‑2‑ol and has been used primarily as an intermediate or impurity in the synthesis of antiviral acyclic nucleoside phosphonates such as tenofovir. The compound itself has been described as an inhibitor of adenosine deaminase and may act on viral thymidine kinase, but it is not approved for clinical use and remains experimental[1][3][6]. Its mechanism involves potential interaction with viral enzymes involved in nucleotide metabolism.
