Overview

S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) is a naturally occurring compound in the human body formed from methionine and adenosine triphosphate. It acts as a major methyl group donor in numerous biochemical reactions including the synthesis of DNA and RNA nucleic acids, phospholipids, proteins, neurotransmitters (such as epinephrine), melatonin, and creatine. In clinical use—primarily outside the United States—SAMe is prescribed for depression, osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia, and various liver disorders. In the U.S., it is available as an over-the-counter dietary supplement rather than a regulated pharmaceutical drug. Its mechanism of action involves transmethylation processes that support cellular growth and repair and influence hormone/neurotransmitter function[1][5][6].
