S-methylcysteine (SMC) is a naturally occurring sulfur-containing amino acid derivative found in various plants, particularly in the *Allium* genus (such as garlic and onions) and certain legumes. It is recognized for its potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. Research indicates that SMC exerts neuroprotective effects in models of Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease, primarily through the activation of the Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway and the modulation of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) associated with oxidative stress. Additionally, SMC has been investigated for its potential to mitigate reproductive toxicity induced by *Toxoplasma gondii* and serves as a dietary biomarker for the intake of cruciferous vegetables and legumes. It is highly bioavailable when administered orally and is metabolized into various sulfur-containing compounds.
