Overview

S-methylmethionine, historically known as vitamin U, is a small molecule derivative of the amino acid methionine that is naturally synthesized in various plants, particularly cruciferous vegetables like cabbage. Although not a true vitamin, it was named for its anti-ulcerogenic properties in the gastrointestinal tract. The compound exerts therapeutic effects by promoting dermal fibroblast migration and growth through the activation of the ERK1/2 signaling pathway. Additionally, it acts as a potent antioxidant, protecting tissues from oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, as demonstrated in experimental models of epilepsy and brain damage. It is primarily available as a research compound and dietary supplement rather than an approved pharmaceutical drug.
