Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**s-Metoprolol** is the S-enantiomer of metoprolol, a selective beta-1 adrenergic receptor antagonist (beta-blocker). It operates by selectively blocking beta-1 adrenergic receptors in cardiac tissue, diminishing the effects of catecholamines (epinephrine and norepinephrine), which leads to a reduction in heart rate, myocardial contractility, cardiac output, and blood pressure. S-Metoprolol is more cardioselective and is the pharmacologically active isomer in racemic metoprolol formulations. Its primary indications are management of hypertension, angina pectoris, chronic heart failure, and post-myocardial infarction risk reduction[1][4][6].
