S-nitroso-N-acetylpenicillamine (SNAP) is a synthetic S-nitrosothiol that serves as a potent and relatively stable nitric oxide (NO) donor. It is extensively utilized as a pharmacological tool in laboratory research to investigate the biological roles of nitric oxide, particularly its effects on vascular smooth muscle relaxation, inhibition of platelet aggregation, and modulation of inflammation. SNAP releases NO spontaneously under physiological conditions, which subsequently activates soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC), leading to an increase in intracellular cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP). In experimental models of sepsis, SNAP has been shown to rescue impaired capillary blood flow, highlighting its potential to counteract microvascular dysfunction. It is primarily available as a research reagent and is not currently approved for clinical use in humans.
