Drug intelligence / Profile preview
S-nitrosoglutathione (GSNO) is an endogenous S-nitrosothiol and a derivative of glutathione in which the hydrogen attached to the sulfur atom has been replaced by a nitroso group. It plays a critical role in nitric oxide (NO) signaling, acting as both a reservoir and donor of bioavailable NO within cells[1][3]. GSNO participates in protein S-nitrosylation, modulating cell signaling pathways involved in inflammation, blood coagulation, endothelial permeability, and immune responses[1][7]. It inhibits platelet activation and aggregation through modification of clotting factors and fibrinogen structure[7]. GSNO is also studied for its potential therapeutic effects on respiratory diseases, cardiovascular conditions, and acute lung injury such as that seen with SARS-CoV-2 infection[2][7]. Its mechanism involves transnitrosation reactions with cellular proteins rather than direct receptor binding. The compound is relatively stable among primary S-nitrosothiols but decomposes under certain biological conditions to release NO or related species[4].
