Drug intelligence / Profile preview
S-pantoprazole is the S-enantiomer of pantoprazole, a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) that suppresses gastric acid secretion by irreversibly inhibiting the H+,K+-ATPase enzyme system at the secretory surface of gastric parietal cells. This action blocks both basal and stimulated acid secretion. Pantoprazole and its enantiomers are primarily used for conditions involving excessive stomach acid production, such as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), erosive esophagitis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and peptic ulcer disease[1][2][5]. The S-enantiomer may have pharmacokinetic or metabolic differences compared to racemic or R-forms but is not widely marketed under a unique brand name in major markets.
