Overview

S-propargyl-L-cysteine (SPRC) is a synthetic analog of S-allylcysteine, a bioactive compound found in garlic, and serves as a novel hydrogen sulfide (H2S) donor. It exerts its therapeutic effects by upregulating the expression and enzymatic activity of cystathionine gamma-lyase (CSE), which is the primary enzyme responsible for the endogenous production of H2S in the cardiovascular and immune systems. H2S acts as a signaling molecule that modulates various physiological processes, including inflammation, oxidative stress, and vasodilation. Developed by Eno Pharmaceutical (Guangdong), SPRC is being evaluated in clinical trials for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, where it is expected to reduce inflammatory cytokine production and joint damage. Preclinical studies have also demonstrated its potential in protecting against myocardial infarction and neurodegenerative conditions.
