Overview

S18986 is a selective, orally active, brain-penetrant positive allosteric modulator of AMPA-type glutamate receptors. It has nootropic and neuroprotective effects in animal studies and enhances cognition in rodents by inducing the release of noradrenaline and acetylcholine in the rat hippocampus. S18986 increases the induction and maintenance of long-term potentiation (LTP) in the hippocampus and induces both production of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) and AMPA-mediated release of noradrenaline and acetylcholine in the hippocampus and frontal cortex of the brain. Its cognitive-enhancing properties have been demonstrated in various behavioral models including procedural, spatial, "episodic," working, and relational/declarative memory in young-adult and aged rodents.
