Overview

The S19 vaccine is a live attenuated bacterial vaccine containing Brucella abortus strain S19, which is the global reference standard for preventing bovine brucellosis in cattle and buffaloes. First isolated in 1923, the strain is naturally attenuated and induces protective immunity against virulent Brucella infections that cause reproductive failure and zoonotic transmission. It is typically administered subcutaneously to young female calves. Despite its efficacy, the vaccine has limitations, including residual virulence in humans (zoonotic risk) and the induction of O-polysaccharide antibodies that interfere with standard serological diagnostic tests (the DIVA problem).
