Overview

**S303 red blood cells** are donor red blood cell concentrates pathogen-reduced ex vivo using amustaline and glutathione in Cerus' INTERCEPT Blood System for Red Blood Cells. Amustaline intercalates with and forms irreversible covalent adducts in pathogen and residual leukocyte nucleic acids, preventing replication, transcription, and translation; glutathione quenches unreacted amustaline. The resulting component is intended to reduce transfusion-transmitted infections and transfusion-associated graft-versus-host disease while preserving red-cell transfusion support. Amustaline is converted principally to S-300 after treatment and is below quantifiable levels in the treated red-cell concentrate.
