Overview

SA3Ag is an investigational vaccine designed to prevent infections caused by *Staphylococcus aureus*, including methicillin-resistant *S. aureus* (MRSA). The vaccine contains three antigens: capsular polysaccharide serotype 5 (*Staphylococcus aureus* capsular polysaccharide type 5) and capsular polysaccharide serotype 8 (*Staphylococcus aureus* capsular polysaccharide type 8), each conjugated to a nontoxic mutant form of diphtheria toxin (CRM197), and a recombinant surface-expressed MSCRAMM protein, clumping factor A (ClfA). These components are intended to induce robust antibody responses that promote opsonophagocytic killing of *S. aureus*. Developed for use in healthy adults, including older populations, the SA3Ag vaccine has demonstrated good immunogenicity and safety in early-phase clinical trials[1][2][4][5]. Pfizer is responsible for its clinical development following acquisition of Wyeth, which had previously licensed the MSCRAMM protein platform from Inhibitex[6].
