Overview

SAB378 (also known as CB-13) is a potent, orally available cannabinoid receptor agonist that acts on both the cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB1) and type 2 (CB2). It was developed by Novartis for the treatment of chronic pain conditions such as neuropathic pain and postherpetic neuralgia. Unlike many cannabinoids, SAB378 is peripherally restricted with limited penetration into the central nervous system, which reduces typical CNS side effects associated with cannabinoids. Preclinical studies demonstrated antihyperalgesic activity in animal models of neuropathic pain without significant CNS effects. Clinical development reached phase II trials but was discontinued for pain indications[1][4][8].
