Sabarubicin

Sabarubicin is a disaccharide analog of the anthracycline antineoplastic antibiotic doxorubicin, developed by Menarini Pharmaceuticals for the treatment of solid tumors, including small cell lung cancer and prostate cancer. It acts primarily by intercalating into DNA and inhibiting topoisomerase II, leading to DNA damage and apoptosis. Sabarubicin has demonstrated superior antitumor efficacy compared to doxorubicin in preclinical studies, likely due to its ability to induce p53-independent apoptosis. The drug has been evaluated in phase II clinical trials for progressive prostate cancer unresponsive to hormone therapy and chemotherapy-naive extensive stage small cell lung cancer[1][2][3][4][5][7].
