Overview
Saber-C is an injectable, sustained-release formulation of calcitonin developed by DURECT Corporation using its proprietary SABER (Sucrose Acetate Isobutyrate Extended Release) delivery platform. The SABER technology utilizes a highly viscous liquid, sucrose acetate isobutyrate (SAIB), which, when mixed with a small amount of solvent and the active drug, forms a depot upon injection that slowly releases the medication as the solvent dissipates. Calcitonin is a peptide hormone that binds to and activates the calcitonin receptor on osteoclasts, leading to a decrease in bone resorption and a reduction in serum calcium levels. Saber-C was designed to provide long-acting therapeutic levels of calcitonin for the treatment of bone-related disorders such as osteoporosis and Paget's disease, potentially improving patient compliance compared to daily injections.
