Overview

The **sabin inactivated poliomyelitis vaccine (sIPV)** is an inactivated polio vaccine produced using attenuated Sabin poliovirus strains (types 1, 2, and 3) grown in Vero cells at lower temperatures (e.g., 32.5°C) to ensure genetic stability and minimize revertant risk, followed by purification via filtration and chromatography, and inactivation with formaldehyde. Developed as a safer alternative to traditional wild-type IPV (Salk strains) for global polio eradication efforts, it leverages the established manufacturing infrastructure of OPV producers while eliminating the risk of vaccine-associated paralytic poliomyelitis (VAPP) inherent in live Sabin OPV; it induces humoral immunity through intramuscular injection, producing neutralizing antibodies that prevent poliovirus spread to the central nervous system, and has been tested in clinical trials (e.g., phase I/IIa) with adjuvanted formulations showing good safety and immunogenicity in infants.[2][3]
