Overview

Sabin oral poliovirus vaccine type 2 (mOPV2) is a live attenuated oral vaccine historically used for the prevention and outbreak control of poliomyelitis caused by type 2 poliovirus. It contains live attenuated poliovirus type 2 derived from the Sabin strain (P712, Ch, 2ab). Administered orally, the vaccine replicates in the intestinal mucosa, inducing robust systemic humoral and local mucosal immune responses. Following the global cessation of trivalent oral poliovirus vaccine (tOPV) in 2016, mOPV2 has been maintained in stockpiles for emergency outbreak response to circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) outbreaks, though it is increasingly being replaced by the genetically stabilized novel oral poliovirus vaccine type 2 (nOPV2) to reduce the risk of reversion to neurovirulence.
