Drug intelligence / Profile preview
PV-CKD Bio (PV) refers to a Sabin-strain inactivated polio vaccine (sIPV) currently under process development by CKD Bio. This trivalent vaccine targets poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3. Unlike traditional inactivated polio vaccines (IPV) that utilize wild-type poliovirus strains, sIPV is produced using attenuated Sabin strains. This approach significantly enhances manufacturing safety by allowing production in Biosafety Level 2 (BSL-2) facilities rather than the high-containment BSL-3 facilities required for wild-type strains. The project is notably supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as part of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI), aiming to provide a stable and cost-effective supply of polio vaccines to address global shortages. CKD Bio is leveraging its expertise in large-scale microbial fermentation and purification to optimize the production process for global distribution.
