Sabrubicin is a novel anthracycline antineoplastic agent developed by Hefei Heyuan Pharmaceutical. It is a derivative of doxorubicin, specifically a 14-O-acyl derivative, designed to enhance antitumor activity while potentially reducing the systemic toxicities, particularly cardiotoxicity, associated with earlier-generation anthracyclines. The drug functions by intercalating into DNA and inhibiting the enzyme DNA topoisomerase II, which prevents DNA ligation and induces double-strand breaks, ultimately leading to programmed cell death. Sabrubicin has primarily been investigated in China for the treatment of small cell lung cancer (SCLC), particularly in patients who have relapsed or are refractory to standard first-line treatments.
