Overview

Saccharomyces cerevisiae CNCM I-3856 is a proprietary probiotic yeast strain developed by Lesaffre and marketed through its Gnosis by Lesaffre business unit. [1, 3] The strain is registered in the French National Collection of Cultures of Microorganisms. [1, 3] It is sold under brand names such as IbSium® and Quatreflora™. [7, 9] As a probiotic, it does not have a single drug target but works through multiple mechanisms. These include co-aggregating with pathogens like *Candida albicans*, inhibiting their adherence to epithelial cells, exerting anti-inflammatory effects, and modulating the gut microbiota. [3, 9] Clinical studies have investigated its use for treating irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), particularly with constipation, as well as for managing and preventing vaginal infections like vulvovaginal candidiasis (VVC) and bacterial vaginosis. [1, 3, 9, 11] The product is administered orally, typically in capsule form, and is designed to survive passage through the gastrointestinal tract. [1, 4, 7]
