Overview

SAD448 is a small molecule drug that acts as a peripherally restricted cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB1) agonist. It was initially developed by Novartis for the potential treatment of ocular hypertension and chronic pain. Preclinical studies have shown that it can control spasticity in models of multiple sclerosis via action on peripheral nerve CB1 receptors while being excluded from the central nervous system (CNS), thereby reducing CNS-related side effects such as hypothermia. The drug has reached Phase I clinical trials for at least one indication[1][2][3][7][8].
