Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Saengmaek-san (SMS) is a traditional Korean medicine (TKM) herbal prescription composed of three primary ingredients: *Liriope platyphylla* (or *Ophiopogon japonicus*), *Panax ginseng*, and *Schisandra chinensis*. Historically used to treat a condition known as the dual deficiency of qi and yin, it is indicated for symptoms such as vitality depletion, body fluid loss, dry cough, and progressive dyspnea, often resulting from heat exhaustion. In modern clinical research, SMS is being investigated for its anti-inflammatory and anti-fibrotic effects, particularly in the context of chronic cough, gastroesophageal reflux-induced chronic cough (GERC), and idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. It is often used in combination with other formulas like Ojeok-san (OJS) and is covered under the Korean national health insurance system.
