Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Safe Bovine Heparin (SBH) is a bovine-derived heparin anticoagulant being developed by Heptech as a sustainable and safe alternative to porcine-derived heparin. Heparin is a glycosaminoglycan that exerts its anticoagulant effect by binding to antithrombin III (ATIII), which significantly accelerates ATIII's inhibition of thrombin (Factor IIa) and Factor Xa. SBH is intended to address supply chain vulnerabilities and cultural/religious restrictions associated with porcine heparin while maintaining a high safety profile through rigorous sourcing and purification processes to mitigate risks such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE). The drug is currently in preclinical development as a replacement for standard porcine heparin in anticoagulation therapy.
