Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Safetussin** is a United States over-the-counter cough, cold, and flu product brand rather than one chemically uniform drug. Its marketed formulations are fixed-dose oral small-molecule combinations designed for temporary symptomatic relief and positioned for adults with high blood pressure or diabetes. Safetussin DM contains dextromethorphan, a centrally acting cough suppressant, plus guaifenesin, an expectorant that helps loosen respiratory mucus; Safetussin PM contains dextromethorphan plus the sedating H1 antihistamine doxylamine; and Safetussin Multi-Symptom products contain acetaminophen, dextromethorphan, and guaifenesin. Historical Safetussin CD products contained dextromethorphan plus phenylephrine. Because the unqualified brand name covers multiple formulations with distinct active ingredients, it should not be treated as one unique molecular entity.
