Overview

Safflor yellow is a water-soluble mixture of chalcone glycosides extracted from the dried flowers of Carthamus tinctorius L. (safflower). It is a traditional Chinese medicine ingredient known for its ability to "activate blood circulation and remove blood stasis," and is widely used in China for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. The primary active constituent is Hydroxysafflor Yellow A (HSYA), which exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant, antiplatelet aggregation, vasodilatory, neuroprotective, and cardioprotective effects. Mechanistically, safflor yellow components modulate multiple pathways including inhibition of platelet aggregation via arachidonic acid metabolism blockade; reduction of inflammation; protection against ischemia-reperfusion injury; improvement of microcirculation; and promotion of apoptosis in damaged cells through TGF-beta/Smad signaling modulation[2][3][6][7]. Clinical use focuses on improving outcomes in myocardial ischemia/reperfusion injury and cerebral ischemia.
