Overview

Safflower seed extract is an extract derived from the seeds of Carthamus tinctorius L., the safflower plant. It contains characteristic polyphenolic compounds, mainly serotonin derivatives such as N-(p-coumaroyl) serotonin and N-feruloylserotonin. These bioactive compounds exhibit potent antioxidant properties, can inhibit the oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL), and have been studied for their ability to reduce atherosclerotic plaque formation and improve arterial stiffness. Safflower seed extract has also demonstrated anti-inflammatory, anticoagulant, vasodilating, antihypertensive, antioxidative, neuroprotective, and anti-cancer effects in preclinical studies. Its use is primarily as a dietary supplement or traditional herbal medicine. Clinical evidence is limited, but there are some controlled trials indicating possible benefits in arterial health for individuals with high-normal blood pressure or mild hypertension[3][5].
