Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Saffron + chamomile is a combination of two herbal extracts—saffron (Crocus sativus) and chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla)—investigated primarily as a dietary supplement for their potential synergistic effects on metabolic, neuropsychological, and neurodegenerative conditions. Preclinical studies in diabetic rodent models have shown that this combination can improve glycemic control, enhance antioxidant profiles, increase dopamine and norepinephrine levels in the brain, and exhibit anxiolytic and antidepressant effects. The mechanism appears to involve antioxidant activity, modulation of monoamine neurotransmitters (dopamine/norepinephrine), inhibition of monoamine oxidase A (MAO-A), anti-inflammatory actions, and possible neuroprotection against neuronal loss. Early clinical research is also exploring its use in Parkinson’s disease due to its potential to inhibit alpha-synuclein aggregation and mitigate dopaminergic neuron loss[1][2][3][4][5].
