Overview

Saffron extract is a concentrated preparation derived from the dried stigmas of the Crocus sativus L. flower. It contains several bioactive compounds including crocin (responsible for color), picrocrocin (taste), and safranal (aroma), as well as flavonoids like kaempferol and quercetin[6][8][10]. Saffron has been used traditionally for its sedative, antidepressant, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and potential anticancer properties[2][5]. Its mechanism of action is thought to involve modulation of neurotransmitters such as serotonin in the brain and antioxidant activity that protects cells from oxidative stress[1][5]. Clinical studies suggest possible efficacy in mild to moderate depression and Alzheimer’s disease symptoms; however, evidence for other uses remains limited or preliminary[1][2][3]. Saffron extract is most commonly administered orally in doses ranging from 20–100 mg daily for up to 26 weeks[1][4].
