Overview

Sago polysaccharides are water-soluble, nondigestible carbohydrates isolated from the sago palm (*Metroxylon sagu*). They function as prebiotics by resisting digestion in the upper gastrointestinal tract and undergoing fermentation by the gut microbiome in the colon. This fermentation process promotes the growth of beneficial bacteria and increases the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). In preclinical models of high-fat-diet-induced obesity and type 2 diabetes, sago polysaccharides have been shown to improve glucose tolerance, insulin sensitivity, and gut barrier integrity, while reducing mucosal inflammation and modulating hypothalamic energy signaling via the gut-microbiome-brain axis.
