The SAGP vaccine is an experimental senolytic peptide vaccine designed to target and eliminate senescent cells by inducing an immune response against the senescence-associated glycoprotein (SAGP). SAGP, also known as BCL2L13 (Bcl-2-like protein 13), is a lysosomal protein that serves as a specific biomarker for cellular senescence, particularly in vascular endothelial cells and in the context of aging-associated disorders. Developed by researchers at Niigata University and Juntendo University, the vaccine utilizes a peptide fragment of the SAGP protein to stimulate the production of specific antibodies. These antibodies facilitate the clearance of SAGP-positive senescent cells, thereby reducing the chronic inflammation and metabolic dysfunction associated with the senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP). Preclinical studies in mouse models have demonstrated that the SAGP vaccine can reduce atherosclerotic plaque burden, improve glucose metabolism in dietary obese mice, and extend the lifespan of progeroid mice.
