Overview

Saikosaponin b2 (SSb2) is a triterpenoid saponin naturally occurring in the roots of *Bupleurum* species, commonly known as Radix Bupleuri in traditional Chinese medicine. It is being investigated primarily for its antineoplastic and antiviral properties. In oncology research, SSb2 has demonstrated the ability to inhibit the proliferation and migration of breast cancer cells (such as the MCF-7 line) by downregulating the **STAT3 signaling pathway**. This downregulation leads to decreased expression of **vasodilator-stimulated phosphoprotein (VASP)** and matrix metallopeptidases **MMP2** and **MMP9**, which are critical for tumor cell invasion and metastasis. Additionally, SSb2 is recognized for its potent antiviral activity, particularly against the **Hepatitis C virus (HCV)** and certain coronaviruses, where it acts by interfering with early stages of the viral life cycle, including attachment and entry into host cells.
