SakSTAR is a novel fibrinolytic agent, a 136 amino acid single chain protein derived from *Staphylococcus aureus* and produced via recombinant DNA technology. It functions by forming an equimolar complex with plasmin, which subsequently activates plasminogen to plasmin. Unlike streptokinase, SakSTAR exhibits a high degree of fibrin-selectivity in human plasma. This selectivity is attributed to potent activation at the clot surface by trace amounts of plasmin and rapid inactivation of the circulating complex by antiplasmin, making it a promising alternative therapy for conditions like acute myocardial infarction. It has been developed for investigational use in preliminary trials.
