Overview

Salacia oblonga extract is a natural plant product derived from the root or bark of the Salacia oblonga plant, native to India and Sri Lanka and widely used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine. The primary active compounds include salacinol and kotalanol. Its main mechanism of action is inhibition of the intestinal enzyme alpha-glucosidase, which slows carbohydrate absorption and reduces postprandial blood glucose spikes. Modern research suggests that Salacia oblonga extract can lower acute glycemia and insulinemia in people with type 2 diabetes after high-carbohydrate meals[3][4][8]. It has also been proposed for use in obesity management, metabolic health support, digestive health improvement, anti-inflammatory effects, and as an antioxidant[4][5][8]. However, robust clinical evidence supporting these uses remains limited.
