Salacia reticulata extract is derived from the roots and stems of the Salacia reticulata plant, a woody climber native to India and Sri Lanka, used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine. Its main active compounds include salacinol, kotalanol, ponkoranol, and mangiferin. These compounds act as potent inhibitors of intestinal enzymes such as α-glucosidase (including maltase-glucoamylase and sucrase-isomaltase), thereby reducing the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates and resulting in lower postprandial blood glucose levels[1][2][3][4]. Mangiferin also inhibits hepatic gluconeogenic enzymes and aldose reductase, contributing to reduced glucose production and flux through the polyol pathway[1]. Published research and clinical studies suggest anti-diabetic, anti-hyperlipidemic, anti-obesity, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, hepatoprotective, and possible immunomodulatory and anti-viral effects[1][2][3][5][8]. Salacia reticulata extract is primarily developed and used as a dietary supplement for the management of diabetes, obesity, and metabolic syndrome.
