Overview

Salacia root extract is prepared from the roots of Salacia species (notably *Salacia reticulata*, *Salacia oblonga*, and *Salacia chinensis*) used in traditional Ayurvedic medicine primarily for diabetes and metabolic disorders. The main mechanism of action is inhibition of **alpha-glucosidase** and **pancreatic lipase**, enzymes involved in the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates and fats. Bioactive constituents include **salacinol**, **kotalanol**, **ponkorinol**, and other polyphenols. These lead to delayed carbohydrate absorption, blunted postprandial glucose spikes, reduction in glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), improved insulin sensitivity, and reduced serum lipids. Additional mechanisms involve modulating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor alpha (PPARα) activity, inhibition of aldose reductase, increased adiponectin, reduced circulating fatty acids, and upregulation of genes involved in lipid metabolism. Human and animal studies support its effects on lowering blood glucose, reducing LDL cholesterol, improving lipid profiles, and potentially aiding in weight management, though robust long-term clinical evidence remains limited. Used as a food supplement or therapeutic tea in traditional practices[1][2][3][5][7].
