Overview

**Salazosulfadimidine** is a synthetic azo-linked small molecule historically marketed as **Azudimidine** for inflammatory bowel disease, particularly ulcerative colitis. It is structurally related to sulfasalazine but couples 5-aminosalicylic acid to sulfadimidine, also known as sulfamethazine, through an azo bond. The compound was used as a colon-directed anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agent; its azo linkage was intended to limit upper-gastrointestinal absorption and allow reductive metabolism by intestinal bacteria, releasing salicylate- and sulfonamide-derived moieties in the colon. Historical clinical literature documents its use during pregnancies in women with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease.
