Overview

Salbutamol (also known as albuterol in the US) is a short-acting beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist used primarily as a bronchodilator to relieve symptoms of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including bronchospasm associated with chronic bronchitis and emphysema. It acts by selectively stimulating beta-2 adrenoceptors in the smooth muscle of the airways leading to relaxation and bronchodilation. Salbutamol is more selective for pulmonary beta-2 receptors than cardiac beta-1 receptors. The drug is available in various formulations including inhalers (metered-dose aerosol and dry powder), nebulizer solutions, oral tablets/syrups and injectable forms[1][3][8]. The R-isomer of salbutamol (levalbuterol) has greater affinity for the beta-2 receptor; however most commercial preparations are racemic mixtures.
