Salbutamol + hypertonic saline is a combination therapy used primarily as an inhaled (nebulized) treatment for respiratory conditions such as bronchiolitis and cystic fibrosis. Salbutamol (also known as albuterol) is a short-acting beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist that acts as a bronchodilator, relaxing airway smooth muscle to relieve bronchospasm. Hypertonic saline (commonly 3% or higher concentration sodium chloride solution) works by drawing water into the airway lumen, thinning mucus and enhancing mucociliary clearance. The combination aims to provide both bronchodilation and improved mucus clearance, potentially reducing symptoms like wheezing, cough, and breathlessness in patients with obstructive airway diseases[6][7][5]. Clinical studies indicate that this combination is safe and effective for mild to moderate bronchiolitis; however, some evidence suggests it may not offer significant additive benefit over either agent alone in certain populations[1][6].
