Duasma is an oral combination therapy consisting of salbutamol and theophylline, designed for the management of bronchospasm in respiratory conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Salbutamol is a short-acting beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist that induces rapid bronchodilation by relaxing airway smooth muscle through the activation of adenylate cyclase and subsequent increase in intracellular cyclic AMP. Theophylline, a methylxanthine derivative, complements this action by non-selectively inhibiting phosphodiesterase (PDE) enzymes, which further prevents the breakdown of cyclic AMP, and by acting as a competitive antagonist at adenosine receptors. Together, these components provide both immediate and sustained relief of airway obstruction, reducing the work of breathing and improving pulmonary function in patients with reversible obstructive airway diseases.
