Overview

Salcrozine is a gastro-resistant, modified-release tablet formulation of mesalazine (5-aminosalicylic acid), developed and marketed by Galen Limited. It is indicated for the treatment of ulcerative colitis, covering both the management of acute phases and the maintenance of remission. Mesalazine acts as a local anti-inflammatory agent within the gastrointestinal tract. Its therapeutic effect is primarily mediated through the inhibition of cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase, which reduces the production of pro-inflammatory prostaglandins and leukotrienes. Additionally, mesalazine is known to act as an agonist of the peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-gamma). The Salcrozine tablet is designed with an inert coating that ensures the active ingredient bypasses the stomach and is released in the lower gastrointestinal tract to maximize local efficacy while minimizing systemic absorption.
