Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Salicornia extract is a polyphenol-rich botanical extract derived from the halophyte plant *Salicornia* (specifically *Salicornia ramosissima* or *Salicornia europaea*), which grows in coastal salt marshes. Developed by the Spanish bio-food-tech startup Marisma Biomed, this extract is rich in bioactive polyphenols produced by the plant as a defense mechanism against environmental salinity and UV stress. In preclinical models of cerebral ischemia, the extract demonstrated significant neuroprotective, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. In clinical studies (such as the pilot trial NCT06076122), daily oral supplementation of 1 g of Salicornia extract was shown to be safe and well-tolerated, while providing favorable modulation of lipid profiles (reducing total cholesterol), lowering homocysteine levels, and improving cognitive function (measured by MoCA scores) in patients recovering from transient ischemic attack (TIA) or lacunar stroke.
