Salicortin is a naturally occurring phenolic glycoside found predominantly in the bark and leaves of plants from the Populus (poplar) and Salix (willow) genera. Its structure consists of a salicyl alcohol moiety linked to a glucose unit via an ester bond[3][6][8]. Salicortin exhibits several biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, anti-adipogenic, anti-amnesic, analgesic, antioxidant, and immune-modulatory effects[1][4][5][9]. Mechanistically, it has been shown to inhibit inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression and nitric oxide production in LPS-stimulated macrophages by blocking NF-kappaB and JNK MAPK signaling pathways[1][4][5]. It also suppresses pro-inflammatory cytokines such as TNF-alpha in endothelial cells. These properties make it of interest for research into inflammatory diseases, obesity-related conditions, neuroprotection (anti-amnesic), and osteoclast-related bone diseases. However, its precise molecular targets are not fully elucidated.
