Salicylamide is a non-prescription small molecule drug, an amide derivative of salicylic acid, known for its analgesic and antipyretic properties. It has been historically used to alleviate mild to moderate pain and reduce fever, often in combination with other analgesics like aspirin and caffeine. Its primary mechanism of action involves the inhibition of cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, particularly COX-1 and COX-2, thereby reducing the production of prostaglandins responsible for inflammation, pain, and fever. While its efficacy as a single agent for pain and fever has been debated compared to aspirin and acetaminophen, it is still used in various combination preparations. Beyond its traditional uses, salicylamide and its derivatives are being investigated for a wide range of therapeutic applications, including as potential anti-HBV agents, PARP-1 inhibitors for cancer therapy, and for treating Alzheimer's disease through cholinesterase inhibition and anti-aggregation effects. It also exhibits antibacterial activity, including against multidrug-resistant *Neisseria gonorrhoeae*, and can induce melanin synthesis.
