Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that serves as a potent keratolytic, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial agent. It is widely utilized in dermatology for the treatment of hyperkeratotic and inflammatory skin conditions such as acne, psoriasis, and seborrheic dermatitis. Its primary mechanism of action involves the dissolution of intercellular cement in the stratum corneum, facilitating desquamation. Beyond its established topical uses, research has identified salicylic acid as a potential chemopreventive agent in various cancers by downregulating cyclin A2 and CDK2 protein levels and mRNA. It is also being investigated for neuroprotective effects in models of Parkinson's disease and as a component of supramolecular formulations for rosacea when combined with intense pulsed light (IPL) therapy.
