Salicylic spirit (also known as Spiritus salicylatus or salicylic acid solution) is a widely used over-the-counter (OTC) topical antiseptic and keratolytic formulation containing 2% salicylic acid dissolved in ethanol and water. Developed and manufactured by companies such as AMARA, it is a staple of first-aid kits used primarily for the local disinfection of skin, minor wounds, and abrasions, as well as for preparing the skin surface before cosmetic procedures or injections. In addition to its antiseptic properties, salicylic spirit is utilized in dermatology to treat acne vulgaris and seborrhea. The active ingredient, salicylic acid, is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA) that penetrates lipid-rich pores to exert keratolytic and comedolytic effects, facilitating the exfoliation of dead skin cells and reducing localized inflammation.
